Doc Bryan's October Update
Hi Guys,
It's been an eventful last couple of months for me. Many of you know from my last post that I competed with Team GB in a summer international inline hockey tournament in Savona Italy in September, with the Team GB posting a fantastic 3rd place finish overall, and only narrowly slotting in behind the current and former world champs, France and Czech respectively. The international hockey season will now take a couple of months off, only to begin again in late October with Team GB trials for the 2019 Inline Hockey World Cup which will take place this year in Asiago, Italy in late May.
Also on the inline hockey front, I have joined league leading team Cruisers, and will compete this fall and winter in the top English Premiership league, with games commencing later this month.
To prepare for all this, many of you know I set myself a running challenge this past summer. After succeeding with my initial target of achieving sub-7-minute miles over a 5.5 mile sprint course around the river, I moved that target to a new challenge of 6.5-minute miles, which I hoped I could reach this autumn. Currently, I am only 6 seconds off my target pace, and although now finding it more difficult to knock seconds off my time, I am still gaining ground and feeling confident that I will achieve this target over the next 3-4 weeks. The running has also helped to improve my overall fitness level, foot speed, and seems to have also helped strengthen my knee ahead of the upcoming hockey season.
While taking a week off in Nice in this past September, I stumbled across the IronMan competition going on there. Thoughts are now rumbling around in my head about the challenge of tackling a triathlon, perhaps next year 🤔
In practice, I have been as busy as ever, helping people recover from injury, shake off the pain bug, or to otherwise achieve their health goals.
I would like to extend a big shout out to patients Stephen Feeney and Matthew Paris, both of whom are former GB rowers and who have been training intensively the last few months in preparation of heading overseas to compete in the prolific "Head of the Charles" rowing race in Boston. We are super pleased to announce that Stephen and Matt finished an incredible 3rd place in the men's masters 4's in what was a world class field of over 30 crews. An amazing accomplishment for them both, and I was very proud to have helped them along the way.
Quoting Stephen from our Facebook page: "Still a bit of life in the old dog yet. Thanks to @putneychiropractic and Dr Bryan for keeping me in better shape than my full time days."
I would also like to send out a big congrats to Jamie Murray and doubles partner Bruno Soares, who reached the men's double final of the Shanghai Masters last week. Many of you will remember that Jamie won the US Open mixed doubles title in early September when he paired with top US female doubles player Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Jamie is now heading off this week to compete in the Vienna Open. Go Jamie!
