Baby Massage Tips

Baby/toddler/child massage is such an important activity to incorporate into your daily routine. It allows for bonding and learning, provides fantastic feedback and stimulus to the brain, as well as having a calming effect on your child’s nervous system.

When?

I would normally recommend after bath time, as your child is already warm and is likely to be more relaxed. You may use an organic, plant-based oil if you prefer, however it is not essential.

Baby massage is particularly beneficial if your child is irritable, as the deep pressure can aid in decreasing an ‘overstimulated’ nervous system.

How?

Try not to use just your fingertips, but rather the whole length of your fingers to apply a medium pressure. Start at the left shoulder by applying a pressure hold for a few seconds, repeat this working down the arm. Move to the torso and repeat the pressure holds, working down towards the left leg, and continue until you reach the toes. Repeat on the opposite side.

Variations:

  • Instead of the broad finger contact, try gentle squeezes along the arms and legs

  • Start at the left arm, move to the torso and then the opposite leg

  • Add in a few bicycle legs, or bent knees with clockwise and anti-clockwise circles

Don’t worry if you are not an expert - give it a go!
