Turmeric - a natural anti-inflammatory
Turmeric is a vibrant spice that contains the anti-inflammatory compound Curcumin, and has long been used for its medicinal properties. Studies have shown that turmeric:
Can decrease inflammation in the body due to its high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
Reduce chronic joint pain, especially in those with rheumatoid arthritis (my dad is a huge fan as it was the only thing that reduced his elbow pain after months of steroid injections and OTC anti-inflammatory drugs)
May decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression by boosting mood
Improve inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis (it's been a big one for me, as stress inflames my skin)
Decrease PMS symptoms due to anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties
Curcumin is not readily absorbed in the body, however, research supports that combining the piperine in black pepper with the curcumin in turmeric enhances absorption by up to 2,000%. If you do choose to supplement, please ensure that it contains black pepper or eat something with a good twist of pepper when taking it.
An easy way to take turmeric is to try this anti-inflammatory tea:
- 2 slices of ginger and turmeric root
- 1 slice of lemon
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- a little honey
- hot water
Things to be mindful of:
If you have a sensitive stomach, start slow with the amount that you take.
There have not been many studies on the effects of turmeric supplementation during pregnancy, so best to stick to turmeric in cooking during this time.
Enjoy!
