Mindful Monday - October 12th
Good morning, good morning and welcome back to your weekly dose of Mindful Monday!
Last week we revisited some classic, inexpensive healthy options and ideas that I hope reminded you there's plenty we can do to look after ourselves without busting the bank.
This week we're talking a bit of tech and other fun stuff for when you want to splash a bit of cash on yourself.
Whoop - Know yourself (from €25)
Whoop is a health tracker – think Fitbit on steroids. I've had this on my wrist for a month now and I must say, I'm impressed. It keeps track of the stuff you'd expect (sleep, activity etc.) but also gives an in-depth analysis of your recovery. By keeping an eye on how much exertion you output each day, the quality of your sleep and your heart rate variability, it lets you know how primed you are for the day ahead.
However, the biggest win for me with Whoop is being able to share my metrics with friends (in this case, Craig), who can see if I've been burning the midnight oil too hard or, in fact, training really well. In short, it keeps me more accountable.
PowerDot (from £185)
Muscle and joint recovery in a neat little box and a sweet bluetooth smart phone app. This is cool. I had a weird shoulder pain thing going on (quite possibly from overdoing lockdown kettlebell routines) that was beginning to worry me. I bought this on whim – thank you, Instagram!?
It was super easy to set-up. You connect the pads to the tiny units, which in turn connect to your phone via bluetooth. You pick the body part and programme and hit play. Your muscles start twitching a bit and do their thing. End result: shoulder back to normal (yes, I was also making sure my spine was regularly checked) and kettlebells happening again every morning... game on!
Theragun (£175 - £549)
This is the new, upgraded version of quite possibly the best home massage device you can get. It comes with loads of settings, heaps of attachments for different muscle groups and various travel-size options. Yep, a bit pricey, but great for when you can't get into your regular massage therapist.
Wahoo Tickr X Heart Rate Monitor (from £65)
Sure, most smart watches now have an optical heart rate tracker on your wrist and they're pretty good, but the good old heart rate monitor strap remains the industry standard. Wahoo have taken things up a notch by adding calories burned, running metrics and indoor cycling cadence to heart rate tracking in their Tickr X monitor. Excellent. Oh, and it also has 50 hours of onboard stat storage so you can train device-free if you prefer.
Athletic Greens (from €87/month)
This is still the one supplement that I take daily. Loaded with 75 different nutritious ingredients, it remains my "get out of jail" card for covering my nutrition baseline."
Simplicity is the end result of long, hard work; not the starting point."

Gonna think about that one... but thanks Fred.
Have an awesome week, guys!
Big love,
