Golf and Chiropractic
Whether you play golf professionally or you play recreationally, there are a number of things that can be done to improve your game, reduce your handicap and protect your spine and other joints from injury.
Over the years I have treated numerous patients who play golf, from teaching pros and tour professionals to weekend warriors and nearly all have the exact same problem that affects the lower lumbar spine and pelvis. On the back of this, I have spent many hours discussing the mechanics of the golf swing with the pros I have looked after and its potential impact on the joints of the skeleton, particularly the lumbar spine and pelvis as well as the hips and knees.
No matter what type of golfer you are, you should from time to time consult a teaching pro to ensure good technique not only of the golf swing but also of the set up. A good set up leads to a better golf swing that is potentially less hazardous to the spine.
Therefore, if you already play golf or you are considering taking up golf (as many people do later in life), it is vitally important to have an efficient, mobile functioning spine. It is recommended to visit a chiropractor to assess your spine and pelvis to ensure golf is right for you. Depending on the results of an assessment; advice, exercises and if required treatment can be provided to prepare you for playing golf as well as tips on set up to protect your spine, hips and knees from injury.
