Achieving Expectations

When a client starts chiropractic care there are two main expectations that need to be reached: the patient’s expectations and the chiropractor’s expectations. One would like to think that these are the same, however they can be markedly different.

Expectations can range from simply obtaining pain relief to a complete cure however, there are many factors that affect recovery and therefore achievable expectations. When you, as a patient consult a chiropractor for the first time, usually in pain, it is your hope and expectation that chiropractic treatment will rid you of this pain relatively quickly.

Results are dependent on many factors:

1) Your age

2) Cause of the symptoms (traumatic or non-traumatic)

3) Examination results and therefore reason for symptoms

4) Length of time you have been experiencing the symptoms

5) Condition of the spine (posture, arthritis, congenital anomalies etc.)

During your initial visit, the above will be investigated during the consultation and examination, which is likely to include an x-ray examination. This provides us with the information required to reach a working diagnosis. These findings allow us to predict outcomes, how you are likely to respond to treatment and how quickly and completely you will get better.

To get the best from your chiropractor and chiropractic treatment in order to achieve your expectation, it is important to comply with your chiropractors advice relating to the investigations required (e.g. having an x-ray examination), the type and frequency of treatment necessary to relieve symptoms and improve the functionality of your spine, what to do and what to avoid, the importance of rehab exercise which often forms part of the recovery process and the benefits of regular check-ups and maintenance.
